Doll Dimensions Presents: Urban Princesses~The Pilot Episode

After quite literallyΒ years of brain storming, planning, designing, crafting, filming, editing, and voice-over-ing πŸ˜‰ , I am SO super thrilled to present to you all the pilot episode of my brand new web show! (AKA the thing I’ve been teasing y’all about for months πŸ˜‰ )

If you’d just like to see the video, you can watch it here….but if you’d like to hear some of the creative process behind it, and see some character photos, read on! πŸ™‚

The concept of Urban Princesses came about around 4 or 5 years ago, way before I started blogging. If you’ve followed the blog for a while, you probably know that I’m a little more than obsessed with vintage sitcoms from the 1950’s and 60’s…and my favorites have always been The Dick Van Dyke Show and That Girl. πŸ™‚

Part of why I love these shows is because both of themΒ have main characters with crazy, awesome, hilarious neighbors….and they both feature happy-go-lucky female leads. πŸ™‚

On the Dick Van Dyke Show, Rob and LauraΒ are always getting together with their next-door neighbors, Millie and Jerry, and those are my favorite scenes, to be honest. πŸ˜‰

On That Girl, there are some hilarious scenes involving Ann and Donald’s neighbors, Ruthie and Jerry…and I also adore Ann’s girl-meets-big-city story. πŸ™‚

Not only that, but I just loveΒ a good, vintage sitcom that manages to involve the characters learning a lesson while they do something hilarious. πŸ˜‰

As some of you might also know, I’mΒ way more than obsessed with Disney, specifically, Disney Princesses. πŸ˜‰

I actually own my own business, appearing at kids’ birthday parties and events, dressed as various princesses (I make all of my costumes πŸ™‚ )…so you might say that princesses are on my mind a lot. πŸ˜‰

(Ahem, the Anna photo is a bit unflattering πŸ˜‰ )

Anyway, about 4 or 5 years ago I started thinking….what if there was a sitcom that starred the Disney Princesses, living in the big city, all in the same apartment building, with each other as neighbors?! The more I thought about it, the more I liked it…their corresponding princes could be incorporated, as could their pets!

“Eh, who am I kidding,” I thought to myself. “Nobody would ever make a show like that.”

Fast forward about 2 years to when I started doll collecting and blogging….and I suddenly got an idea as I was buying my Disney Store Elsa doll……..

What ifΒ I made the show? That way, I could have fun writing the show, designing the outfits, and I could even bring in some characters that aren’t official Disney princesses, like Megara or Jane! πŸ™‚

Speaking of designing outfits….I love Disney Bounding, so the idea of creating a bunch of modern outfits directly inspired by the characters themselves sounded like a fun challenge! πŸ˜‰

(Here’s me Disney Bounding as Anna with my Anna doll! πŸ™‚ )

I decided part-way through the planning stages that I wanted the show to have Anna as the main character…the one going on a journey to find her way in the big city! BTW, Kristoff will arrive later in the series. πŸ˜‰Β I also plan on introducing the other Disney Princesses later in the series, because as you may have guessed from my previous teaser photos, the outfits are already designed for a lot of other characters. πŸ˜‰

At its heart, I really wantΒ Urban Princesses to be a show that kids and adults alike can enjoy….a show about family, friendship, and fun. πŸ™‚

I’ll let you all be the judge of that, but after you’ve watched the episode, you can see my individual character photos below. πŸ™‚

      1. AWWWW VIRTUAL HUGS!!!! πŸ˜€ ❀ ❀ ❀ My darkest secret is that when no one else is home I dance around wildly singing along to the Star Wars soundtrack, even though I know there are no words. πŸ˜‰ That's how I practice. πŸ˜‰

  2. Wow, I’m totally blown away! This could be a real sitcom, it had me laughing out loud. πŸ™‚ Your attention to detail is amazing, I loved all the stores, and your voice acting is awesome! Anna in particular sounds so endearing. You did an amazing job on this, I can’t wait to see future episodes…it’s so cool that it was a project so many years in the making! THIS IS A CAUSE FOR ALL CAPS BECAUSE IT WAS AWESOME! ^__^

  3. Dear Grace,
GREAT pilot episode! Although I have to admit that halfway through the episode I expected, in typical sitcom fashion, that Snow and Cindy would both put in REALLY good words with their managers and that Anna would get calls back telling her that she got BOTH of the other jobs and then would have to resolve the issue of having been accepted for THREE jobs. Your version is much more plausible though. I guess I was just in that mindset of sitcoms thriving on the implausible. Best of luck with this project.
    Signed, Treesa
P.S. When I first heard your premise for Urban Princesses, it reminded me of a web comic I’ve seen called Pocket Princesses. However I think Pocket Princesses is less sitcom and more reality show.

    1. I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Treesa! πŸ™‚ ❀ I didn't get time to go into this in the post, but I've thought ever since I first saw Frozen that Anna and Rapunzel would make awesome BFFs, and I wanted them to end up at the same workplace. πŸ˜‰ Also because I plan on introducing Kristoff and Flynn Rider eventually, and I thought that foursome could have some awesome adventures. πŸ˜‰ Thanks as always for commenting! πŸ™‚

      1. Supposedly, it is Disney canon that Rapunzel is a cousin of Anna and Elsa’s. If you look carefully, you can see a couple that looks like Rapunzel and Eugene walking towards the castle when they are opening up the gates in Frozen.
