Some My Little Pony Musings

Hi everyone!

Sorry AGAIN about the post drought.  The fair is almost over, and then I’ll have a lot more to share.  🙂 I’m also really excited to say that I got a total of 8 Best Of Shows this year at the fair!!!  And the best part: the Doll Formal Dress Display got a Best Of Show! 😀

Today I have a different sort of post.  As you all know, I’m a total My Little Pony fangirl.   I’m also really galvanized about MLP/Equestria Girls because this summer I get to plan and lead a summer camp for little girls themed around Equestria Girls.  I get to make costumes of the Mane 7 (the normal Mane 6 plus Sunset Shimmer) for me and the counselors to wear, and we get to be in character for a whole week! 😀 (I’m going to be Twilight Sparkle.)

Anyhow, I thought it would be fun to just talk about some of my head canons and ideas related to MLP and EQG.

And because I can’t stand to leave this post almost photo-less, here is the adorable new Explore Equestria Starlight Glimmer I got! 😀

I know that season six is going to be premiering soon, and I’m really, really excited.  We can see the episode summaries already, and it looks like we’ll be getting a lot of character development for Starlight Glimmer in the season six premiere.  I’m really excited for this, because I feel like Starlight has a lot of potential to become another Element of Harmony.  I always really appreciate characters who were not “good” originally, but were able to see their mistakes and work hard to earn others’ trust.  Also, I don’t think that Starlight is like other villains such as Adagio Dazzle and Tirek, who wanted to be adored and/or wanted to control everything and everyone.  Starlight truly thought that forcing others to give up their cutie marks would be good for them.  She had been hurt as a filly when a friend left her behind because of a cutie mark, and didn’t want others to go through the same thing.  I know that she was very bitter in the season six finale, but once again, she didn’t know that preventing the Mane 6 from meeting would ruin Equestria.  I don’t think that Starlight is or ever was “rotten to the core.” (Did you start singing the song right there? ‘Cause I might have 😉 )  I think that she just needed someone to give her the friendship she had always wanted.

Where am I going with all of this?  Well, at the beginning of MLP, we had a very even cast.  Two earth ponies (Applejack and Pinkie), two pegasi (Fluttershy and Rainbow, and two unicorns (Twilight and Rarity). Right now, we have two earth, two pegasi, one unicorn, and one alicorn.  I think that Starlight would even that up very nicely, becoming the second unicorn.  What would her element of harmony be?  I think that it would be either justice (as Sunsetmajka626 suggests in her awesome Mane 8 art), or equality.  While Starlight was definitely trying to take the concept of equality too far in her village, it’s true that in a real friendship, no one should act superior.  In a sense, Starlight was correct about equality being a part of friendship.

I’ve also seen some awesome art where Sunset Shimmer is the second unicorn, and I love this concept, too.  I really, really like Sunset’s character (and color scheme).  As I said earlier, I appreciate that she has made up for her mistakes and has worked hard to earn back the trust of others.  That takes a lot of humbleness and humility.  I thought that her being the second unicorn was a great idea, but then this photo from New York Toy Fair (source: MLP Merch) adds another concept (which I like even better).

Note that the Sunset Shimmer doll (top row, far right) has wings. While Sunset did have wings in the My Past is Not Today music video, and when she transformed into Daydream Shimmer in the Friendship Games, I wasn’t sure if it was official, since in both cases the wings were temporary.  Since Sunset is a unicorn in pony form, this might mean that she is or officially will become an alicorn within the Legend of Everfree movie.  Also, I think that Sunset’s element would be forgiveness, because she not only needed forgiveness from others to redeem herself, she also used forgiveness to defeat Midnight Sparkle in the Friendship Games.

The more I think about it, the more Twilight and Sunset are eerily similar to Celestia and Luna.  Think about it: one is themed after the day, and one the night.  One of them once transformed into a raging monster who tried to take over Equestria, and the other used the Elements or Harmony to defeat her.  After turning back into herself, the pony deeply regretted what she had done, and worked hard to earn back the trust of others, soon becoming an important part of Equestria.

This story could be filled in with Celestia and Luna, or Twilight and Sunset.  Granted, the whole one-is-day-and-one-is-night thing is sort of reversed, but it still works (at least to me).  But that’s not all.  The Brony Notion points out in one of his videos that Twilight Sparkle, Sunset Shimmer, and Starlight Glimmer all have a very similar name formula: something in the sky + a word that means “sparkly”.  I wonder…does this mean that Twilight and Sunset are related, just like Luna and Celestia, adding to the similarities?  Maybe Starlight is more distantly related, sort of like a Cadence figure.

In any case, I would love to see Sunset come back to the pony world.  I mean, it seems in all other cases that everyone has to go back to their own world eventually.  I would love to see Starlight become the second unicorn and Sunset become the second alicorn in the near future.

But how about the distant future?  In some shows, there are special episodes that give us a look into the future.  I would love to see an episode of MLP: FiM that lets us see into the future of Equestria.  While this may seem like overkill, I would love to see the Mane 8 become an epic council of alicorn princesses (heck, I just really wanna see an alicorn Pinkie 😛 ).  I mean, Celestia and Luna probably don’t intend to rule forever.  Sure, they’ll always be alicorns and thus always be royalty, but I don’t think they’d want to rule forever.  Even if we don’t get to see a Mane 8 alicorn council, I think that having Twilight, Sunset, and Starlight as the next Celestia, Luna, and Cadence (respectively) would be pretty dang awesome.

What do you all think?  Do you think a council of princesses would be amazing, too?  Do you think Sunset and Starlight could be new elements of harmony?  If so, what elements would they be?

XOXOXO,

Grace
